Environmental Profile
Waste Management
Records from the City Environment and Natural Resources Office show that the total solid waste generated in the City is made up of biodegradable wastes (66%), recyclable wastes (11.10%) and residual/special/hazardous wastes (22.90%).
Solid wastes are collected via the city’s government’s forward truck and eleven (11) garbage trucks. These trucks are composed of seven (7) dump trucks and four (4) mini dump trucks which traverse the city regularly in 2-3 routes per day. The city also manages the Integrated Waste Management Facility (Center) located at Barangays San Jose and Luna with an approximate area of 12 hectares. Part of the area is rehabilitated and developed into a comprehensive eco-park while a Sanitary Landfill is under construction.
Toilet Facilities
Provision for adequate human waste disposal is important indicator for health and sanitation. Gaps in any of these could lead to an increase in diseases leading to morbidity and mortality. Of the 34,512 households in the City, 33,818 or 97.99% have access to sanitary toilet facility. Of this magnitude, 28,188 households or 83.35% own a flush type toilet while 3,866 households or 11.43% share flush toilet, and the remaining 1,764 households or 5.22% use closed pit latrines. Therefore, only 2% or 694 households are using unsanitary toilet facilities wherein 294 HHs or 42.4% are using open pit, 33 HHs or 4.76% drop/overhang, and 367 HHs or 52.9% has no toilet facility at all.
Although most of the households in some barangays own flush toilet, a considerable number of households in most barangays still share flush toilet in areas like Rizal with 412 households, 279 in Calaocan, 249 in Rosario and 225 in Mabini.
